They help preventing diseases and are responsible for feelings of happiness and good humour!
Activities like sport, sex and laughing allow our bodies to create endorphins. These are chemical substances which stimulate the central nervous system and create a physical and emotional response that leads to a sensation of happiness and well being.
The hypothalamus and the hypophysis (located in the brain) are responsible for producing these hormones. The amount of endorphines in each body ins’t always the same. Some people are more capable of releasing them in a higher volume and that can determine how we react in daily situations.
The “hormones of happiness” are directly related to hurt, ability to heal yourself, happiness and good mood. They also work on the immune system and combat aging, stress, reduce pain and prevent blood vein injuries.
Physical activity is clearly the best way of releasing endorphins. Any sport practiced moderately, 4 times a wekk for about 45 minutes has the power of releasing enough endorphins to make us feel better, more relaxed and improve our self esteem. This happens because after an intense period of physical effort the right part (responsible for feelings and emotions) of our brain predominates over the left part (responsible for reason and logic). Several studies have shown that depression and pessimism are states of mind directly related to low levels of endorphin release.
How can you release endorphins?
Besides sports there are other ways to release the “happiness hormone”:
Listening to Music:
Several studies have shown that music releases endorphins on sick people and decreases the needs for pharmaceutical treatments. Besides that, it’s a great way to forget emotional pain and deal with anxiety. Music also helps releasing dopamine which increases the energy levels and good mood.
Falling in Love: neurons are responsible for the production of the “love hormones” like endorphines. They act in areas like love, sex, emotions and affection.
Making Love: after an orgasm the release of endorphines works as a natural painkiller and a great influence on humour.
Floating: people who suffer from stress, anxiety and depression can relax through floating in salt water tanks or pools: it makes the right part of the brain (related to emotions) take control over the left one.
