Strategies to eat in restaurants without getting fatter!
If you frequently go out for lunch or dinner, you should watch the amount and variety in the choices you make. If you go just 1 or 2 times a month there is no need for worries. Going to a restaurant can even be a good way to compensate strict diets and delight yourself with that meal you love so much. If you frequently eat out here are some tips you should follow:
- make a plan before you leave: what kind of food exists in the restaurant? Is there salads and fish? If you know all this you can have an idea of what to eat and get you mind off the dishes rich in calories.
Imagine you know you have a dinner party in a Friday. You should start a small diet on Monday so you can abuse a bit in the restaurant.
- Try not to arrive to the restaurant feeling like you could eat a whole cow, or you’ll end up eating to much of the wrong things.
- avoid the “buffet” restaurants where you “pay $15 and eat all you can”: when people pay one price for an unlimited amount of food, they’ll eat until they’re full and that’s wrong! Of course it’s good to pay for one dose and eat 2 or 3 but that’s a huge mistake when you’re following any type of diet.
- between the menus you like, chose the one with less calories: it’s no secret that the dishes we love the most are the richest in calories and fat. This happens because fat makes food very tasty. Knowing this, most restaurants use too much fat in order for their food to be extra tasty. Many don’t know that taste can be acquired with healthy ingredients like herbs and spices.
Try to chose a tomato sauce instead of cream, grilled meat instead of fried, yoghurt sauce instead of mayonnaise.
- beware with appetizers! Sometimes, the main dishes don’t have the most of calories in a meal. Cheese bread, butter, mayonnaise sauces, onion rings, etc can be quite delicious but can also ruin a perfectly healthy meal. Eat a salad or a soup before the main dish.
- ask the waiter to do some changes in your meal: “Can you substitute the French fries for baked potatoes?”, “can you bring the sauce in a side plate?”, “put less butter please”, “ can my steak be grilled instead of fried?”, “ no need to put grated cheese on top”.
- restaurants frequently give us more food than we need. We’re happy to pay few for lots of food and end up eating more than at home. Remember than the more we eat the more calories our body will keep (and not use).
